PPD Press Release: “TOP Watch” Public Safety Program

January 29, 2025 by Town of Pittsville

1/29/25

The Pittsville Police Department and Pittsville Council of Commissioners Announce the Launch of TOP Watch: A Public/Private Partnership for Enhanced Community Safety

PITTSVILLE, MD – The Pittsville Police Department and Pittsville Council of Commissioners, in partnership with a number of local businesses, is proud to announce the development and systematic implementation of TOP Watch, an innovative public/private partnership designed to enhance public safety across the town of Pittsville.

This initiative will provide the police department with access to internet-based surveillance systems from participating local businesses, as well as grant-funded surveillance systems strategically located throughout the Town of Pittsville. The TOP Watch program underscores the unwavering commitment of the Pittsville Police Department and participating businesses to ensure the safety of patrons and the well-being of the entire community. By harnessing the power of technology, TOP Watch aims to create a safer environment for residents, visitors, and businesses alike.

By working together with local businesses, the Town of Pittsville is not only enhancing crime prevention strategies but is also fostering a sense of community solidarity, creating a more secure and welcoming environment for everyone. The TOP Watch system is a force multiplier, being designed and constructed to be expandable which enables future growth as additional grant funding becomes available. This forward-thinking approach ensures that the town’s safety infrastructure can evolve and adapt to the needs of our community. Notably, the effectiveness of the TOP Watch initiative has already been demonstrated in real-world applications. The system has played a crucial role in solving an armed robbery case, as well as exonerating a local first responder who was involved in a motor vehicle collision (MVC). These successful outcomes highlight how proactive collaboration between government and community partners can serve everyone better. By integrating resources and technology, significant strides are being made towards preventing and solving crime. Our commitment to community safety is stronger than ever, and we encourage all local businesses to join us in this vital initiative. The Pittsville Police Department invites all businesses in the area to participate in the TOP Watch program and contribute to a safer Pittsville.

For more information about the program, please contact the Pittsville Police Department at 410-835-3013.
