Press Release: Pittsville tops list of safest cities in MD

September 15, 2025 by Town of Pittsville

PITTSVILLE, MD – According to FBI crime data collected by SafeHome.org, the Town of Pittsville has the lowest property crime rate in the State of Maryland. This can be attributed to the commitment to public safety by the Town’s Council of Commissioners and the dedicated efforts of the Pittsville Police Department to establish and foster relationships with residents and local businesses.

The council members have long been staunch supporters of the Police Department’s community-based policing philosophy which focuses on addressing small quality-of-life issues before they escalate into larger problems. This approach, coupled with innovative IT solutions designated as our “TOPWatch” initiative, has significantly contributed to the town’s safety and well-being.

The TOPWatch initiative is a successful public-private partnership between the Pittsville Police Department and local business owners, who have granted the Police Department access to their security and surveillance camera systems. This collaboration, funded partially by grants, has also led to the installation of surveillance cameras at key locations throughout Pittsville. The initiative serves as a force multiplier, enhancing law enforcement’s ability to monitor activities in real-time as well as provide video evidence to assist with the prosecution of cases.

Since the implementation of the TOPWatch initiative, the Pittsville Police Department has effectively utilized the surveillance footage to solve crimes, establish fault in traffic collisions, and significantly reduce drug use in our local park. The enhancement of security in our park has made it more family-friendly, allowing residents to enjoy community events and outdoor activities without concern.

We are proud to see the positive impact of our community-based initiatives. The collaboration between our police department, our citizens, and local businesses exemplifies how working together can foster a safer community. Strength Through Community.

The Town of Pittsville remains committed to employing innovative strategies that prioritize the safety and quality of life for all its residents. The recent statistics from the FBI serve as motivation to continue enhancing public safety and fostering a community where families and businesses can thrive.
